The future of social media.
A few weeks back I attended the sold-out Glug Glasgow masterclass on social media. The overriding theme of the evening? Social media is about to rule the world. Now, to prepare for this imminent digital takeover, Tala Byrne from Dog Digital discussed her social predictions for 2018 and beyond.
1. The rise of social shopping
If this prediction comes true, our bank balances are about to take a dip! Looking at the current trends of shoppable tags on Instagram and product catalogues on Facebook, it’s increasingly likely that we will be able to purchase directly through social.
2. Social media marketing will be in-app only
With the rise of mobile, brands are increasingly reaching out to customers entirely via social media. This can already be seen through promoted videos, ads in stories and sponsored Snapchat filters.
3. The meaning of influencer will become diluted
This year alone 87% of brands planned to use influencers in their marketing plan. However, with services to promote tweets and buy fake followers, accounts are no longer organically grown. This makes it increasingly difficult for marketers to find genuine influencers to engage with their audience.
4. The role of search tech will increase in importance
Social is influencing the way that we search. With Gen-Z and Millennials feeling more comfortable communicating via emoji, Google has launched the ability to search with emoji – try searching for restaurants near you using a food emoji!
Visual search is becoming an increasingly popular feature, with Pinterest launching Lens and ASOS introducing visual search, it is now easier than ever for consumers to gain information. Who needs human interaction to ask where they got their shoes from when you can *slyly* take a photo and search?
Let’s see where these predictions go, who knows, maybe this time next year we’ll be writing our blog posts in emoji language!
