Meet the Team: Colette Reid, Group services Manager
It's time to meet another member of our team. This week it's our HR superstar, Colette!
What’s your job title?
Group Services Manager.
Give us your career to date, in a couple of lines.
Began my career in Television working my way up from a Runner to Head of Production, followed by a short stint in Digital Media in the early noughties. I went to the dark side (Corporate) working in Law & Pharmaceuticals for many years, before seeing the light and returning to Digital 4 years ago.
What do you most want to know the answer to?
Do we really exist?
Where do you feel most present?
When I am helping other people thrive in their role or lives.
What’s your most treasured object?
My wedding ring.
What inspires a sense of adventure within you?
Visiting new countries and cities around the world. I have a thirst for finding out about new cultures and places of interest. Having done the planning beforehand and marked up my ‘Top 10 Travel Guide Book’ I engage the services of a tour guide when I arrive and top up my knowledge.
Won any awards or industry accolades?
Won TV awards as part of the STV production team for: The Disney Club and Highway. Won TV awards as part of the LIVE TV production team for: Lie Detector and Agony. Won Region of the Year award for Celesio/Lloydspharmacy in 2010 and 2012 as part of the Region 1 Team. Won 2018 SME Culture Award as part of the LEWIS Team and achieved 99%, 99% and 100% for the past 3 years in the Achilles Audit.
Where did you gain a passion for your career?
I’m a born organiser, so it made sense to work in that capacity. Lists and post-it notes are my best friends!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
‘A little bit of knowledge can be dangerous’ – always find out the full information before making a decision, as to presume or assume can lead to all sorts of problems further down the line.
If you could do any job in the world what would it be?
Luxury Hotel Inspector………getting to travel the world staying in the best hotels – it’s a no-brainer! 😊
What was the last book you read or film you saw that changed the way you view the world?
It’s a duo of books – Ugly & Beyond Ugly – which diarise the life of Constance Briscoe, who was one of the first black female high court judges in the UK. She was part of a family of 11 siblings born to Jamaican immigrant parents, living in London. She struggled through family life of being given regular beatings by her parents and always being told she was ‘Ugly’ and wouldn’t amount to anything. She went on to pay her way through law school and secure her place ‘at the bar’. One of my favourite quotes from her is ‘Had I not had my past; I would not have my future’. Her life has been peppered with heaps of drama – her mother sued her over the content of her books, and she even ended up in prison for perjury - when she developed a ‘god complex’ and started to believe she was above the law.
What advertising campaign or advert from your childhood still sticks in your mind?
The Green Cross Code Man adverts from the 70’s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRUBMBi_lp4. I remember when I was sitting my cycling proficiency test in school and David Prowse – The Green Cross Code Man – turned up to test us. He went on to play Darth Vader in the Star Wars films. It was an amazing moment in my life as a 5 year old.
