overall opinion
Truthfully, I’m a little underwhelmed by the new album cover. The image certainly ties into the title but I’m left a little disappointed by the whole experience.
While the seascape suits a gallery wall I expected to see more from one of the most boundary breaking bands in the world. It’s certainly a change in direction for U2 following their previous release from November 2004 ‘’How to dismantle an atomic bomb’.
Having bought into the last album, tour and even the T-shirt it will be interesting to see if the mood of this cover reflects a shift in musical direction for the band.
This should be further expanded by an accompanying film ‘Linear’ and a limited edition 64 page magazine to be released to coincide with the album. This new path will also hopefully be translated into a new look for the U2 website which is starting to date a little having had no real development for the last 4 years.
As a devoted fan of U2 I always look forward to seeing how the band continually pushes the fuzzy boundaries of music, video and design. Hopefully Bono hasn’t been too busy saving the world to do justice to this latest release.
exciting/interesting features
The cover features artwork by Japanese artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. Hiroshi lived and studied in Tokyo before moving to America in the early 70s.
Now based in New York, Sugimoto’s ‘Boden Sea’ has been selected for the latest release.
